Can I manually partition unassigned disks if internal shelf is already partitioned in ADP?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- Advanced Disk Partitioning (ADP)
- Unassigned disk drives
Answer
The proper way of partitioning drives is through system initialization and storage expansion. It is possible to partition the drives manually, however the procedure is available for recovery purposes and is not supported on new shelves or disks deployment.
For system initialization, see KB: What are the steps followed to configure advanced drive partitioning from ONTAP boot menu option 9 on HA pair?
For storage expansion, see KB: How to add partitioned disks to a new raidgroup
Considerations for manual partitioning of disks:
-
Same type and size of disks has to be used
-
Blocksize (rawsize) of the manually created partitions has to match existing partitions.
-
Disk drives have to be owned - more information and commands available in ONTAP 9 Documentation Center - Assign ownership of a disk to a system
If manual partitioning of a disk is required, please contact NetApp Technical Support for assistance and reference this article.
