ADP (Advanced Drive Partitioning) Details
Beginning with ONTAP 9.2, a new Advanced Drive Partitioning option is available from the Boot Menu ( Managing a node by using the boot menu ) that provides additional management features for disks that are configured for root-data or root-data-data partitioning.
The following management features are available under the Boot Menu Option 9:
- Unpartition all disks and remove their ownership information
This option is useful if the system is configured with partitioned disks and you need to reinitialize the system with a different configuration.
- Clean configuration and initialize system with partitioned disks
This option is useful for the following:
- System is configured with whole disks and you need to configure it for root-data partitioning
- System is incorrectly configured for root-data partitioning and you need to correct it
- There is an AFF platform or a FAS platform with only SSDs attached that is configured for root-data partitioning and you can reinitialize it with root-data-data partitioning to gain increased storage efficiency
- Clean configuration and initialize system with whole disks
Option 9 (Configure Advanced Drive Partitioning) has been added to the Boot Menu:
ADP Submenu
From the menu select option 9:
(1) Normal Boot.
(2) Boot without /etc/rc.
(3) Change password.
(4) Clean configuration and initialize all disks.
(5) Maintenance mode boot.
(6) Update flash from backup config.
(7) Install new software first.
(8) Reboot node.
(9) Configure Advanced Drive Partitioning.

When Option 9 is selected, the Advanced Drive Partitioning Boot Menu Options submenu displays the following:

(9a) Destroy aggregates, unpartition all disks and remove their ownership information.
(9b) Clean configuration and initialize node with partitioned disks.
(9c) Clean configuration and initialize node with whole disks.
(9d) Reboot the node.
(9e) Return to main boot menu.
(9f) Remove disk ownership
Option 9a: Unpartition all disks and remove their ownership information:
- Execute on each node of the HA pair first
Note: Allow first node to complete before executing on the partner node
- Removes existing aggregates owned by this controller
- Destroys the existing partitions owned by this controller
- Removes ownership from all locally owned disks
Option 9b: Clean configuration and initialize system with partitioned disks:
Prerequisite: Disks must be unpartitioned and unowned (Option 9a)
- Execute this option on each node of the HA pair after Option 9a completes
Note: Allow first node to complete before executing on the partner node
- Performs a wipe-clean of configuration
- Automatically assigns local disk ownership and determines partition layout (data, parity, and spares)
- Reinitializes the controller with partitioned disks
Option 9c: Clean configuration and initialize system with whole disks:
Prerequisite: Disks must be unpartitioned and unowned (Option 9a)
- Execute this option on each node of the HA pair after Option 9a completes
Note: Allow first node to complete before executing on the partner node
- Performs a wipe-clean of configuration
- Automatically assigns local disk ownership
- Reinitializes the controller with whole disks
Option 9d: Reboot the node
Option 9e: Return to the main boot menu
Option 9f: Remove disk ownership
- Available in ONTAP 9.11.1 and later
- Removes disk and partition ownership only from the node executing the option
