What is Performance Capacity in ONTAP 9 and Unified Manager?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- Active IQ Unified Manager
Answer
- Performance Capacity is a new feature that ONTAP 9 and Active IQ Unified Manager (AIQUM) together support, which allows you to proactively monitor performance headroom in your storage environment.
- This feature helps storage administrators address the following concerns:
- Where is the best place to create a new volume / LUN?
- Where can this volume / LUN be moved to?
- Is this cluster over utilized?
- Is a particular cluster resource over utilized?
- When will this cluster become over utilized?
Details of Performance Capacity
- ONTAP measures headroom as a basic calculation per node.
- AIQUM does more calculations to find the optimal point for CPU and IOPS.
- This calculation is the point that CPU and IOPS can go the highest before incurring extra storage latency, like the graphic below.
- For more information, see the following NetApp TechComm TV video on how to use this feature:
Additional Information
Similar metrics can be obtained from ONTAP CLI to help determine if a node is over utilized.
