System shuts down due to battery full charge capacity low false-positive alerts

Applies to

  • AFF A300, AFF A200, FAS8200, FAS2650, FAS2620

    • SP firmware 5.6 or newer

  • AFF A220, AFF A150, AFF C190, ASA A150, FAS2750, FAS2720 

    • BMC firmware 11.3 or newer

Issue

  • Battery starts a learning cycle as seen in SP/BMC events all or SP-LATEST-SYSTEM-EVENT-LOG AutoSupport section:

Record 351: Wed Jan 05 12:00:13.540000 2022 [IPMI.notice]: 011e | 02 | EVT: 0301ffff | Bat_Lrn_Active | Assertion Event, "State Asserted"

  • Subsequently, an AutoSupport is generated because the battery's remaining capacity drops below 30%:

HA Group Notification (BATTERY_LOW) ALERT 

  • EMS Log reports a critical warning stating that NVRAM battery level is dangerously low:

[node_name: statd: monitor.nvramLowBattery:EMERGENCY]: NVRAM battery is dangerously low.

  • Battery learning cycle completes as seen in SP/BMC events all or SP-LATEST-SYSTEM-EVENT-LOG AutoSupport section:

Record 356: Wed Jan 05 18:31:55.700000 2022 [IPMI.notice]: 0123 | 02 | EVT: 0300ffff | Bat_Lrn_Active | Assertion Event, "State Deasserted"

  • About 20 minutes after, system shuts down due to battery capacity  reaching  a critical level as shown in EMS or BMC/SP console logs:
[node_name:monitor.shutdown.emergency:EMERGENCY]: Emergency shutdown: Environmental Reason Shutdown (Battery PCT capacity critical)
 
[node_name: env_mgr: nvmem.battery.fccLowCrit:EMERGENCY]: The NVMEM battery full-charge capacity is critically low (30 ). To prevent data loss, the system will shut down in 20 minutes.
