"File too large" error messages when maxdirsize limit is reached

Issue

  • Unable to write or delete files on the destination folder of the affected volume on the Linux OS.
  • Unable to copy a file from one folder to the destination folder with the following errors.

cp /Volumes/pbda ta/renders/47ad8e8d11d3f959f577f9720f84f920/minimap*.jpg /Volumes/pbdata/renders/0dfe252edeaf078573194df3b235b998/
cp: cannot create regular file `/Volumes/pbdata/renders/0dfe252edeaf078573194df3b235b998/minimap0.jpg': File too large
cp: cannot create regular file `/Volumes/pbdata/renders/0dfe252edeaf078573194df3b235b998/minimap1.jpg': File too large
cp: cannot create regular file `/Volumes/pb data/renders/0dfe252edeaf078573194df3b235b998/minimap2.jpg': File too large
cp: cannot create regular file `/Volumes/pbdata/renders/ 0dfe252edeaf078573194df3b235b998/minimap3.jpg': File too large
cp: cannot create regular file `/Volumes/pbdata/renders/0dfe252edeaf0 78573194df3b235b998/minimap4.jpg': File too large

  • EMS errors point exactly which directory reached the limit:

Fri Nov 20 12:07:15 -0600 [svm1: wafl_exempt06: wafl.dir.size.max.warning:error]: Directory size for fileid 27978107 in volume vol1 is approaching the maxdirsize limit.

Fri Jul 11 05:13:23 PDT [svm1: wafl_hipri: wafl.dir.size.max:warning]: Directory /vol/vol1/pbdata/renders/0df e252edeaf078573194df3b235b998/ reached the maxdirsize limit.

  • When trying to create a new folder with a certain amount of characters, operation fails with:
mkdir: cannot create directory ‘newDirectoryName’: File too large
  • Depending on the client OS, the user may encounter the following error:
$ touch filename
touch: cannot touch 'filename': No space left on device
