FC port negotiates at 8Gbps instead of 16Gbps due to faulty port on HBA card

Issue

  • Single FC port on the NetApp is consistently negotiating at 8Gbps instead of the expected 16Gbps when connected to switch port on a Cisco switch.
  • Other ports on the same slot with similar hardware connected to same cisco switch are operating at 16Gbps without issue.
  • No specific alert in EMS for this issue, the port reports online.

slot 2: Fibre Channel Target Host Adapter 2c

  •  The data link rate for affected port on same HBA card reports 8gig.

  • Below non-disruptive troubleshooting steps were performed:
    • SFP and cable replacement on both ONTAP and switch ends.
    • Enabled trunk mode on switch port and toggled the port.
    • Manually configured both the ONTAP FC port and the corresponding Cisco switch port to operate at 16 Gbps, however, the link failed to come online and the switch port remained down.
    • Port toggling (shut/no-shut, up/down)
    • Connected the switch port cable to an alternate switch port that is known to support 16 Gbps, and the link successfully negotiated and came online at 16 Gbps, confirming that the switch port and cabling were functioning correctly.
    • Isolated that the issue is with NetApp FC port.
