Applies to

  • NetApp ONTAP 9.15.1P14 (and likely later/earlier versions)
  • Clustered Data ONTAP environments
  • Environments using Ethernet switches with breakout cables

Issue

  • Persistent“SwitchIfDead_Alert” alarms on Ethernet ports
  • Ports that are physically connected via breakout cables on the switch side
  • Breakout cables are connected but not configured for use on the ONTAP node
  • Alerts are typically accompanied by messages such as:

Alert: SwitchIfDead_Alert on Ethernet1/1/3(Switch_Name)

Description: Interface is up but not passing unicast traffic for 12 pollingintervals.

GUI Warning: "ports can't be reached because the broadcast domainconfiguration isn't correct."
