Feature Version A version of software that introduces new or improved features. A Feature Release and any of its Service Updates (P-releases), are grouped together with respect to software version support policies. For ONTAP 8.3 and earlier releases, Feature Release refers to a new major codeline, designated by an increment in the “x” or “y” positions of the release number (x.y.z).
Service Update A Service Update release delivers timely fixes for critical customer encountered bugs for customers who cannot wait for the next Feature Release. These Service Updates are issued after a Feature Release is designated as generally available (GA). For further information, view the ONTAP Release Model.
Version “N” The latest available feature version of a software product.
Version “N-1” The feature version of a software product that was available before Version “N” was available.
Version “N-2” The feature version of a software product that was available before Version “N-1” was available.
End of Engineering Support The date marking the end of Full Support for a particular feature version of a NetApp system software and the beginning of Limited Support. Abbreviated as EOES.
End of Version Support The date marking the end of Limited Support for a particular feature version of a product and transition to Self-Service Support. Abbreviated as EOVS.
Client Software Client software is any software that resides on a customer-provided computing host (server, desktop, laptop or mobile device). Client software does not include operating systems, embedded software or firmware on hardware products.
Appliance Software Software packaged with an engineered computer system to excel in performing specific functions in a larger network of systems. Examples at NetApp: AltaVault backup and archive appliance, StorageGrid Webscale object store appliance.
