The Universal SAS and ACP cabling guide lays out several cabling rules for reliability, universality, and commonality. One of these rules is that - of the two paths to a single disk storage stack from a single node, one should connect to the top and one to the bottom of the storage stack.

If you are informed either by MyAutoSupport or another source that this particular rule is being violated, this article shows how to diagnose and possibly remediate the issue with no downtime.

Note: The procedures documented here have only been tested and proven stable in Data ONTAP 8.2.1, 8.3 and later. Attempting this on earlier releases of Data ONTAP might result in unplanned system downtime. For more information, see the guidance in BUG 691240.
