What impact is caused when disabling CDP and LLDP on ONTAP?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)
- Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP)
Answer
- Disabling these protocols prevents ONTAP from detecting the neighbor information.
- The cluster network and switchless configuration detection use these protocols to view the information of neighboring devices that are connected to each port of the nodes.
- CDP/LLDP is an essential functionality for switched clusters on the cluster network for cluster session manager (CSM) to work as designed.
- It is not expected to turn off CDP/LDDP for the OTNAP internal cluster network.
Additional Information
When using system cluster-switch create command, it does use SNMP for switch information discovery and cluster switch health monitoring. CDP/LDDP are still required for CSM to work properly and the use of SNMP for monitoring does not mean that CDP/LLDP can get disabled on cluster network.
