What happens when your volume runs out of inodes?

Answer

When 100% of inode utilization for a volume is reached, data can no longer be written to that volume until the number of inodes are increased or existing inodes are freed

  • Data can no longer be written to that volume even though the volume has free space
ONTAP  will trigger the following EMS events
wafl_exempt12: wafl.vol.outOfInodes:error]: file system on Volume volume1@vserver:d0936bce-#####-#####-### is out 
of inodes because it has reached the maximum number of files
wafl_exempt12: callhome.no.inodes:error]: Call home for OUT OF INODES
Digital Active IQ Wellness risk will report
Active IQ Unified Manager (9.8 and later) will report the Issue
