Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • Cloud Volumes ONTAP
  • Inode file capacity

Answer

  • Data can no longer be written to that volume even though the volume has free space.
    • outOfInodes means  100% of inode utilization for a volume is reached.
    • At 99%, ONTAP can be used as usual, but it will soon reach 100%. So it is hard to guarantee how long it can be maintained.
  • ONTAP  will trigger EMS error events  as mentioned in KB (OUT OF INODES) ERROR - AutoSupport message as below:

[node1: wafl_exempt12: wafl.vol.outOfInodes:error]: file system on Volume volume1@vserver:bf5f-00a0989xxxxx is out of inodes because it has reached the maximum number of files
[node1: wafl_exempt12: callhome.no.inodes:error]: Call home for OUT OF INODES

  • Digital Active IQ Wellness risk will report when the amount of inodes used is 90% or greater - Wellness Overview
  • Active IQ Unified Manager (9.8 and later) will report the Issue and Unified Manager will allow you to fix it directly:
