Description

When a CIFS/NFSv4 client first accesses a directory, it may trigger the Unicode conversion. If your storage environment already contains existing NFSv3 directories with large numbers of subdirectories and files, the automatic on-first-access conversion can have a performance impact on the storage system.

  • This conversion is resource-intensive and might result in the system becoming temporarily unresponsive, including a loss of service.
  • Possible Symptoms encountered due to conversions:
    • Loss of Heartbeat
    • Unsynchronized logs
    • No ssh access
    • No data access
  • EMS message indicating a conversion is causing performance degradation:

Tue Jan 17 14:16:33 CST [netapp_fake: wafl_hipri: wafl.dir.convert:warning]: WAFL converting directory conversion in progress.

  • Anticipating the use of large directories by CIFS/NFSv4 clients is the key to avoiding processing delays, which this issue can trigger.
