FAQ: Unicode conversions
Applies to
- Data ONTAP 7-mode
- clustered Data ONTAP 8
- ONTAP 9
Description
When a CIFS/NFSv4 client first accesses a directory, it may trigger the Unicode conversion. If your storage environment already contains existing NFSv3 directories with large numbers of subdirectories and files, the automatic on-first-access conversion can have a performance impact on the storage system.
- This conversion is resource-intensive and might result in the system becoming temporarily unresponsive, including a loss of service.
- Possible Symptoms encountered due to conversions:
- Loss of Heartbeat
- Unsynchronized logs
- No ssh access
- No data access
- EMS message indicating a conversion is causing performance degradation:
Tue Jan 17 14:16:33 CST [netapp_fake: wafl_hipri: wafl.dir.convert:warning]: WAFL converting directory conversion in progress.
- Anticipating the use of large directories by CIFS/NFSv4 clients is the key to avoiding processing delays, which this issue can trigger.
