Applies to

  • AFF/FAS systems
  • ONTAP 9.9.1P15 and earlier
  • NVIDIA SN2100 Ethernet storage switches

Issue

NetApp AFF/FAS clusters running ONTAP 9.9.1P15 generate persistent system health alerts related to storage path loss and unsupported switches, including:

  • Repeated “NoPathToNSMA_Alert” and “NoPathToNSMB_Alert” (SAS-connect, Major severity)
  • “UnsupportedSwitch_Alert” for storage switches in the Switch-Health subsystem

Example log output:

::*> system health alert show
Node: Node1
Resource: switchname
Severity: Major
IndicationTime: <timestamp>
ProbableCause: Unsupported Ethernet switch is detected.
PossibleEffect: Communication problems and network connectivity issues occur.
CorrectiveActions: Unsupported Ethernet switch "switchname" found. Connect a supported Ethernet switch to the network.

::*> system switch ethernet show
DeviceName: switchname
ModelNumber: OTHER
SwitchNetwork: storage-network
IsMonitored: false
ReasonForNotMonitoring: Switch: switchname Model: OTHER is not qualified in a storage-network

Additional symptoms:

  • Storage switches (NVIDIA SN2100) appear as “Model: OTHER” and are not monitored by ONTAP’s Ethernet Switch Health Monitor (CSHM).
  • Storage path health alerts indicate risk of loss of shelf redundancy if a module fails.
  • Management switches and storage switches are incorrectly added to CSHM, which is intended for cluster switches only.
