"There appears to be valid data in the NVRAM" error seen while attempting a Service Image (BIOS) update

Issue

When performing either an automatic or manual update of the service image (BIOS) for a controller, the following error occurs:

LOADER-A> update_flash
There appears to be valid data in the NVRAM.  You must boot Data ONTAP in order to flush
the NVRAM to disk, and then cleanly shutdown the filer with the halt command.
*** command status = Error(-1)
