Shelves Not Detected on FAS systems Due to IOM12C Incompatibility

  • ONTAP 9.11.1P13 (and earlier than ONTAP 9.12.1P18)
  • Disk shelves equipped with IOM12C modules

Issue

After installing new DS212C disk shelves on a FAS2720A HA pair running ONTAP 9.11.1P13, the shelves are not detected by the system.

  • The shelves appear as Shelf?:unknown NETAPP:DS21212IOM12C in sysconfig -a.
  • All disks attached to the new shelves are visible and healthy, but the shelves themselves are not SES-managed or recognized as enclosures.
  • EMS logs contain entries such as: 
    ses.shelf.unsupportAllowErr: Unsupported disk shelf found on channel 0a.
  • Example sysconfig -a output:
