Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • FCP
  • Application-Specific Integrated Circuit -(ASIC)

Issue

  • During maintenance (takeover/giveback), two ports using the same HBA application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) do not come up.
  • Sysconfig -a may report two ports using the same ASIC as  Operational Status: startup
  • Host detects failed paths or lost access to LUN using FC target ports on the same ASIC.
  • The two FC target ports on the same HBA / ASIC have not been reliable in the past going up and down at the same time.
    • Example: 2a automatically resetting, 2b is reported offline and may come back online for a short time after troubleshooting.
  • STIO and Adapter errors may be seen in the system log ( EMS).
  • Resetting the switch port does not change the ONTAP target port status and status-admin is up.
  • SwitchONTAP SFP, and FC cable have been checked and replaced.
Example:
Cluster::> network interface show -data-protocol fcp -fields status-admin,status-oper,status-extended
vserver          lif                   status-oper status-extended      status-admin
---------------- --------------------- ----------- -------------------- ------------
svm1              Node_1_4c             down        LIF not initialized  up
svm1              Node_1_4d             down        LIF not initialized  up
Cluster::>network fcp adapter show
Node  Adapter  Est  Address Admin Status  Status
---- --------  ---- -------  --------     -------
abc    2b      false   0       up         offline

  • EMS log shows:
ERROR callhome.fcp.sram.dump: Call home for FCP SRAM DUMP.
ERROR scsitarget.fct.port.offline: Fibre Channel Target port 2b was taken operationally offline due to too many errors received by the FCT driver.
ALERT scsitarget.hwpfct.initFailed: Initialization of adapter failed on Fibre Channel target adapter 2b.
NOTICE scsitarget.hwpfct.errorReset: An error was encountered in the FC target driver on Fibre Channel target adapter 2a. The adapter will be automatically reset to clear the
status:0x87000000, status1:0x742f, status2:0x0, DIP:1, RN:1, RDY:0, Dump owner:9 condition.
