Description
This guide identifies the likely cause from the evidence, then sends you to the matching solution article.
A disk bay reports BYPASSED or ENCLOSURE BYPASSED when a shelf module stops presenting the drive on one or both SAS paths.
- The same status can come from different causes:
- a failed or poorly seated disk
- a bay or drawer fault
- an IOM or SAS-path problem
- a node-specific discovery state
- less often a firmware or ONTAP issue
How to identify the error
Collect the following on both nodes, then use the table. A bypass status is evidence, not proof of the failed FRU.

- Note the following, then use the table below:
- Scope — one bay vs several bays vs the whole shelf
- Path —
BYPASSED Aonly,BYPASSED Bonly, or both - Visibility — whether the disk still appears in
sysconfig -a/storage disk show - Node comparison — both nodes see the same fault, or only one node
- Shelf type — DS460C (
DS460-12) or another SAS shelf - Recent change — disk replace, IOM reseat, shelf firmware, or ONTAP upgrade
