Answer

  • Enabling NetApp Aggregate Encryption (NAE) or NetApp Volume Encryption (NVE) does not have any effects on the functionality of symlinks.
  • Symlinks, or symbolic links, are files created by UNIX clients that contain references to other files or directories. When accessed by an SMB client, a symlink redirects the client to the target file or directory it refers to.
  • In the context of ONTAP, which allows both CIFS and NFS clients to access the same datastore, symlinks can exist within volumes holding shares, other volumes on the Storage Virtual Machine (SVM), or even volumes on other SVMs.
  • It is important to note that NAE and NVE, when implemented, do not impact the functionality of symlinks. These encryption features operate independently of the symlinks configured.
