VMware datastore not available after NetApp volume offline

Issue

  • VMware configuration change causes ONTAP volume out of space condition, snapshots deleted and space is freed allowing ONTAP volume/LUN to online, with no change on VMware, showing 0 bytes free and rescan does not bring datastore back online
  • Expanding Volum/LUN and expanding a datastore in VMware(Vsphere) causes out of space condition, not able to online datastore and several virtual machines not responsive but show powered on  after resolving space issue
  • VMware GUI shows status "Error,Unknown"
  • df -h from ESXi cli shows 0 B Size 0 B Used 0 B Available

Localcli storage nmp device list | less

Localcli storage core device list | less

  • Shows datastore "Status: Not connected"
  • After power failure VMware datastore shows disconnected, unable to browse files and several virtual machines not responsive but show powered on
