ONTAP Select: Unable to vMotion node due to "Currently connected device backing is not accessible" error

When attempting to vMotion an OTS node to another ESXi host to perform maintenance on the source host, a similar error can be see in the vMotion migration wizard in vCenter:

Unable to migrate from <source server> to <destination server>: "Currently connected device" 'Serial port' uses backing 'serial port', which is not accessible.
