CIFS Authentication Failure with System Error 1311

Issue

  • Users are unable to access CIFS shares, and mount attempts fail with the following error:
System error 1311 has occurred.
We can't sign you in with this credential because your domain isn't available.
  • ONTAP EMS and secd logs show authentication failures similar to:
secd.cifsAuth.problem: vserver(<SVM>) General CIFS authentication problem.
Error: User authentication procedure failed
TCP connection to <DC_IP>, port 445 failed: Operation timed out
Unable to connect to NetLogon service on <DC_HOSTNAME>
(Error: RESULT_ERROR_SPINCLIENT_UNABLE_TO_RESOLVE_SERVER)
No servers available for MS_NETLOGON
FAILURE: Unable to make a connection (NetLogon:<DOMAIN>)
Result: RESULT_ERROR_SECD_NO_SERVER_AVAILABLE
CIFS authentication failed
 
  • Authentication fails for new sessions and existing sessions may continue to work
