Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • Volume Move
  • Fabricpool

Answer

  • It is because the volume is a fabricpool volume, 90% of the user data is tiered to object-store/cold tier.
  • Data in object-store will not occupy aggregate space, thus moving fabricpool volume from one aggregate to other will not reclaim all the space but only reclaim space which is in performance tier/local tier.

Example:
  • If the volume used size is 2.28TB, out of which 2.15TB is in cold tier/object-store.
  • So only 130GB is in local tier or being occupied in aggregate.
Volume show-footprint:

Volume : vol_test

      Feature                                           Used      Used%
      --------------------------------      ----------------      -----
      Volume Data Footprint                           2.28TB        16%
Footprint in Performance Tier                 132GB         6%
         Footprint in StorageAccount                  2.15TB        94%
      Flexible Volume Metadata                        15.6GB         0%
      Deduplication Metadata                          12.7GB         0%
         Deduplication                                12.7GB         0%
      Delayed Frees                                   97.1MB         0%
      Total                                           2.31TB        16%

      Effective Total Footprint                       2.31TB        16%

  • If vol move is performed, aggregate will only reclaim 130GB of space not whole 2.28TB.
  • Reason, 2.15TB is in cold tier which doesn't consume space from aggregate.
