Answer

Yes, ONTAP maintains a restartable checkpoint  for FlexGroup rebalancing.

  • ONTAP saves a checkpoint every 30 seconds of scanning on an on-disk metafile that marks where in the overall filesystem of the volume that scanner has gotten to.
  • If a FlexGroup rebalancing is stopped and then restarted, ONTAP will start from the most up-to-date checkpoint saved on disk.
  • The idea is to not rescan the same files every time when FlexGroup rebalancing runs, this gives the entire filesystem a chance for rebalancing, even over multiple scans.
