Issue

When an Intel 40Gb/s Ethernet Network Interface Controller (NIC), found on a controller motherboard or in a PCIe slot, reboots after downgrading firmware from the generic 6.01 version to the NetApp custom version 5.04, the NIC ports remain uninitialized due to a capability check failure.
The following Intel NICs are exposed:

  • AFF A700s: Ports e0a, e0e, e0f, e0j (OCP modules on PCM)
  • X1144A: 2p 40GbE NIC Cu|Op
  • X1147A: 4p 10GbE SFP+ Cu|Op

When the ports remain uninitialized, they are no longer detected by ONTAP. You
can review output from the node shell "sysconfig -v" command to determine
whether this has occurred.
In rare circumstances, the firmware downgrade process can exceed ONTAP time
limits, resulting in a system disruption. The following is an example of the
panic message:
PANIC : thread (nic_fw_auto_proc) on cpu 3 hung for 4001 milliseconds
