Node down after BMC upgrade to 11.9, IPMI failure

Applies to

  • FAS2720, FAS2750
  • AFF A220
  • BIOS on 11.8 or earlier
  • BMC firmware upgrade to 11.9 or later

Issue

  • After a BMC firmware upgrade to BMC 11.9 or later while on BIOS version 11.8 or earlier, one or both nodes reboot the BMC to its backup firmware and fail to boot.
  • The following errors are seen:

LOADER-B> boot_ontap

Waiting for SP ...
SP failure. Resetting SP from primary FW. This can take a few minutes
Waiting for SP ...
SP failure. Resetting SP from backup FW. This can take a few minutes
Waiting for SP ...
Failed to recover SP
IPMI:Get controller FRU inventory:failed.   <<<<<<
Configuring Devices ...
IPMI PCI Slot Control failed.     <<<<<<
...
BIOS POST Failure(s) detected: SP IPMI failure. Abort AUTOBOOT <<<<<<
