Local Tier creation fails in System Manager due to lack of disks

  • Entry level platform like FAS2820
  • 10TB HDDs SAS drives in internal and external shelf
  • 8 Root-Data paritioned drives available in the internal shelf
  • ONTAP System Manager

Issue

  • Attempting to create a data aggregate (Local Tier) through ONTAP System Manager "Add Local Tier" page, fails:

A local tier will not be created on node "node_name" for the following reason: 4 disks specified, but at least 7 disks are required for raid_tec.

  •  
    Attempting to perform manual partitioning, to external shelf drives, disks automatically revert to an unpartitioned state
