Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • Space usage
  • Metadata consumption

Description

  • Volume size can grow and shrink over time;
  • Usage of the volume can significantly change over time based on capacity, file count and others;
  • Some metadata reserve or usage associated with volume peak usage (e.g. file count) will never shrink  again, despite the volume size is being shrunk;
  • While df command on Unix and Used Space value in Windows Properties tab might account for certain metadata, the Unix du command and Size on Diskin (Windows) will only account for user data.
