Issue

  • During a battery learning cycle in any of the platforms in the Applies To section, battery sensor readings might become unavailable – particularly if the BMC IPMIStack restarts at the same time.
  • If the readings remain unavailable, the system’s environmental protection policy may shut down the node.
  • If both nodes in an HA pair are affected, data services might be interrupted.
  • BMC recovers from unreadable sensor the day prior with no ONTAP reboot:
    Record 338: Sat Nov 08 00:11:11.149382 2025 [IPMI.warning]: Recovering BMC due to a non-readable sensor
  • Then a battery learning cycle starts and fails:
    Record 409: Sat Nov 08 12:05:11.263893 2025 [IPMI.notice]: 0416 | 02 | EVT: 6f06ffff | Bat_Status | Assertion Event, "Learn Cycle"
Record 410: Sat Nov 08 15:17:02.842815 2025 [BMC.notice]: Battery Learning cycle failed with error 0x88
    Record 411: Sat Nov 08 15:17:13.542179 2025 [IPMI.notice]: 0417 | 02 | EVT: ef06ffff | Bat_Status | Deassertion Event, "Learn Cycle"
  • The node shuts down due to NVMEM battery unreadable sensor alerts:
    Record 468: Sun Nov 09 00:12:49.406520 2025 [IPMI.emergency]: env_mgr triggers OS halt:Battery temp unreadable for 2 mins
    Record 469: Sun Nov 09 00:13:23.584592 2025 [Controller.notice]: Appliance user command halt.
    Record 470: Sun Nov 09 00:13:23.624175 2025 [IPMI.notice]: 0451 | 02 | EVT: 6f03ffff | Sensor 255 | Assertion Event, "Storage OS graceful shutdown"
    Record 471: Sun Nov 09 00:13:25.340475 2025 [IPMI Event.critical]: System power down
    Record 472: Sun Nov 09 00:13:25.344857 2025 [IPMI.emergency]: Data ONTAP initiated shutdown
