Answer

Backup
  • During a Cloud Backup / SnapMirror backup to an object store destination, SnapMirror maintains source volume deduplication savings automatically
  • Additionally, object compression is automatically applied to any data being written to an object store destination, providing more storage efficiency savings at-rest
  • Source-side compression and compaction savings are lost, along with any aggregate-level deduplication savings
Restore
  • All storage efficiency savings are lost during a SnapMirror restore from an object store source to a restore target ONTAP volume
  • Storage efficiency savings can be re-gained by enabling storage efficiency on the restore target ONTAP volume
  • When restoring to AFF platforms, inline deduplication and inline compression are automatically enabled
