What storage efficiencies are maintained in Cloud Backup (SnapMirror Cloud) relationships?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- BlueXP Cloud Backup / Cloud Backup Service
- SnapMirror Cloud (SM-C)
Answer
Backup
- During a Cloud Backup / SnapMirror backup to an object store destination, SnapMirror maintains source volume deduplication savings automatically
- Additionally, object compression is automatically applied to any data being written to an object store destination, providing more storage efficiency savings at-rest
- Source-side compression and compaction savings are lost, along with any aggregate-level deduplication savings
Restore
- All storage efficiency savings are lost during a SnapMirror restore from an object store source to a restore target ONTAP volume
- Storage efficiency savings can be re-gained by enabling storage efficiency on the restore target ONTAP volume
- When restoring to AFF platforms, inline deduplication and inline compression are automatically enabled
Additional Information
- The SnapMirror logs associated with a cloud backup will always report "Logical Transfer". This is not indicative of whether the transfer is maintaining storage efficiency savings and can be ignored
