Applies to

  • FAS/AFF Systems
  • BES-53248 and Cisco cluster switches
  • ONTAP 9

Issue

  • ONTAP reports system health alerts for switch ports not used by the cluster, specifically:
EMS Alerts:
Wed XXX XX 07:01:14 +0200 [Nodea:cshmd:hm.alert.raised:alert]: AlertId=SwitchIfDeviceDisconnected_Alert, AlertingResource=Switch1/Slot:0 Port:11 25G-Level raised by monitor ethernet-switchWed XXX XX 07:01:14 +0200 [Nodea:cshmd:hm.alert.raised:alert]: AlertId=SwitchIfDeviceDisconnected_Alert, AlertingResource=Switch2/Slot:0 Port:11 25G-Level raised by monitor ethernet-switch

System health alert:
Monitor : ethernet-switch	ethernet-switch
Alert ID :	SwitchIfDeviceDisconnected_Alert
Alerting Resource :	Switch1/Slot: 0 Port: 11 25G - Level
Subsystem :	Switch-Health
Indication Time : Fri XXX 0X X0:13:XX 20XX
Perceived Severity : Degraded
AutoSupport Triggered : false
Probable Cause : Loss_of_signal
Corrective Actions	:
1) Check the physical connections between the switch and the connected devices. Ensure that cables are properly connected and not damaged.
2) Inspect the switch interface configuration for any inconsistencies or errors that may cause the interface to go down. Correct any misconfigurations found.
3) Verify the performance and health of the connected devices, as well as the switch itself. Check for any hardware issues or malfunctions that may cause the interface to change its operational status to down.
4) Monitor the network traffic on the affected interface to identify any unusual patterns or excessive loads that may contribute to the disconnection.
  1. Ports 0/11 and 0/12 on both cluster switches (Switch1 and Switch2) reported flapping or device-disconnected alerts.
  2. These ports are not mapped to any ONTAP cluster node and are not used for cluster interconnect traffic.
  3. SFPs/cables are physically connected to these disabled ports.
