Answer

Performance and Statistics Collector (Perfstat) data is helpful in troubleshooting storage system performance issues. This article includes information on the Perfstat tool, instructions on collecting Perfstat from multiple operating systems along with best practices and troubleshooting.

Please follow these best practices before starting:

  1. Perfstat is a real-time collection tool and needs to be run during an impact.

  2. Perfstat 8 is for clustered Data ONTAP only, all Data ONTAP 7-Mode systems should use Perfstat 7.

  3. Run perfstat from a physical host or a VM not associated with the cluster being collected against.

  4. Do not attempt to use over a VPN connection, perfstat is latency sensitive and will timeout.

  5. Collection host should be on the same network as the cluster, avoid a lot of network hops or latency between host and cluster.

  6. The perfstat application and related output files should only be stored on the local disk of the collection host.
