Answer

Element versions 11.8 and later contain critical BIOS and component firmware updates for the H610S platform and due to these critical updates NetApp is now shipping new expansion nodes and RMA replacement nodes with Element versions that include the updated BIOS and firmware revisions.

The updated BIOS and firmware revisions are not compatible with Element versions 11.7 and earlier and nodes that have been updated cannot have their BIOS or component firmware downgraded to earlier versions, therefore clusters need to be upgraded to Element versions 11.8 or later in order to be compatible with new expansion nodes and RMA replacement nodes.

See the following for additional information on the critical fixes included with Element 11.8 and above, the H610S upgrade procedure, and issues associated with incompatible versions of Element, BIOS, and component firmware:

H610S Element Versions - Installation and Upgrade Requirements

New H610S Expansion or Add-on Nodes

New H610S nodes are now shipping only with Element versions 12.0 or later.  The BIOS and firmware revisions on these nodes are incompatible with Element versions 11.7 or earlier, therefore clusters must be upgraded to Element versions 11.8 or later in order to be able to accommodate the addition of new nodes.

H610S RMA replacement nodes

Clusters on Element 11.7 or earlier will be supported with compatible RMA replacement nodes pending supply availability (estimated to be through December 2020). After the reserve supply is depleted, clusters must be upgraded to Element versions 11.8 or later before RMA replacements can be completed.

Important: RMA replacement nodes with Element versions 11.7 or earlier being installed into a cluster with Element versions 11.8 or later will require an additional "power disconnect process" step.

H610S RMA Replacement and New Expansion Node Information:
  • Cluster: Element 11.7 or earlier
  • New or RMA replacement node: Element 11.7 or earlier
  • Cluster: Element 11.8 or later
  • New or RMA replacement node: Element 11.7 or earlier
  • Cluster: Element 11.8 or later
  • New or RMA replacement node: Element 11.8 or later
  • Cluster: Element 11.8 or later
  • New or RMA replacement node: Element 11.8 or later

RMA Replacements

  • Nodes will have Element 11.7 or lower and can be added to the cluster via normal procedures.
  • Supply of these nodes is limited and these are only expected to be available through December 2020.
  • After the reserve supply is depleted, clusters must be upgraded to Element versions 11.8 or later before an RMA replacement can be completed.
  • NetApp also recommends that all clusters with H610S nodes are upgraded to Element 11.8 or higher as soon as possible due to critical BIOS and firmware updates that are included in these releases.

New Add-on or Expansion Nodes

  • N/A as all new nodes are now shipping with Element 12.0 higher.
  • Clusters are required to be upgraded to Element 11.8 or higher before adding new nodes with Element 12.0 or higher.

RMA Replacements

New Add-on or Expansion Nodes

  • N/A as all new nodes are now shipping with Element 12.0 higher.

RMA Replacements

  • Nodes can be replaced and added to the cluster using standard procedures with no additional steps required.

New Add-on or Expansion Nodes

  • Nodes added to the cluster using standard procedures with no additional steps required.

RMA Replacements

  • Nodes can be replaced and added to the cluster using standard procedures with no additional steps required.

New Add-on or Expansion Nodes

  • Nodes added to the cluster using standard procedures with no additional steps required.
