When do inodes get reclaimed after deleting files and snapshots?
Applies to
ONTAP 9
Answer
- When a file is deleted, ONTAP will determine whether inodes reclaimation occurs immediately or is delayed later
- If inode reclaimation is delayed, a subsystem called volume Blog (Batched Free Log) will queue delete operations to lessen performance impact
- Space will not be reclaimed and become available until the volume Blog processes the deleted blocks
Additional Information
- You can view the delayed deletes that have yet to be processed yet by running the
vol show-space -fields performance-metadata
command - What is "Performance Metadata" shown in the "volume show-space" output?
