VLAN ports without a configured data LIF show degraded with l2_reachability

Applies to

  • ONTAP 9.13.1 and later
  • Connectivity Fault Management (CFM)

Issue

  • Some VLAN ports health is reported as degraded with "l2-reachability"
  • Those VLAN ports have no data LIFs configured on them in the node
  • The L2ping test fails:
::*> l2ping -node <node1> -sourceport <VLAN_port> -count 10 -mac <MAC-of-VLAN_port_on_node2>
Error: command failed : the remote interface is down or unreachable if a vlan was specified it may not be configured on the switch
  • Packet traces show that ONTAP is sending CFM frames on the L2 network to check connectivity.
