Should multiple SVMs be used to host multiple S3 buckets?
Applies to
- ONTAP S3
- ONTAP 9
Answer
- Some versions of ONTAP do not allow hosting more than one bucket per SVM. Consult product documentation for your version to determine whether multiple buckets may be created in the same SVM.
- If using a version of ONTAP which supports multiple buckets per SVM, it is at the discretion of the administrator whether to serve multiple buckets from the same SVM, or host one bucket per SVM.
- Using multiple buckets per SVM can reduce the need to repeat the same configuration steps (defining a particular S3 access group / bucket policy / policy statement, etc.)
- Using multiple SVMs per client / group of clients can help with isolating those clients from one another (providing access to different buckets through different IPs / LIFs.)
- This is not an exhaustive list of differences. The choice is ultimately a matter of preference, based on use case.
