Impact of enabling LDAP signing and sealing when using ONTAP as an Active Directory–joined file server

Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • CIFS/SMB servers joined to Microsoft Active Directory (AD)

Answer

  • Enabling LDAP signing and LDAP sealing is a securityenhancing configuration and is widely recommended by Microsoft and common security benchmarks.

  • When all participating systems support LDAP signing/sealing, the feature does not typically cause functional or performance issues.

  • Data access through CIFS/SMB and NFS is normally not interrupted by enabling these settings. The scope of impact is mainly limited to:

    • LDAP authentication processing

    • LDAP directory lookups and queries performed by the ONTAP CIFS server

  • LDAP signing/sealing is considered a best practice for systems integrated with Active Directory.
