CIFS access fails with "The account is not authorized to login from this station"

Issue

  • Windows clients intermittently cannot access CIFS shares hosted on ONTAP. Users receive errors such as:
    • "The account is not authorized to log in from this station", when attempting to connect to an CIFS share using name
    •  “Windows cannot access \\share. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network.”
  • Network trace shows the following pattern:

SMB2SessionSetupRequest, NTLMSSP_NEGOTIATE
SMB2SessionSetupResponse, Error: STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED, NTLMSSP_CHALLENGE
SMB2SessionSetupRequest, NTLMSSP_AUTH, User: DOMAIN\\user
SMB2SessionSetupResponse
TCP RST from client immediately after session setup

  • Windows Event Log (SMBClient, EventID 31019):    “Mutual authentication was unexpectedly lost after re-authenticating to \\SERVER. Status: The account is not authorized to log in from this station.”
