Answer

  • ONTAP P-releases are cumulative patch releases. A later P-release includes fixes incorporated in previous P-releases together with additional fixes.
  • When selecting a patch release for an ONTAP upgrade, the latest available P-release is generally preferred unless there is a specific reason to select an earlier release, such as a known issue relevant to the environment.
  • For example, when choosing between ONTAP 9.19.1P2 and 9.19.1P3, 9.19.1P3 would generally be selected because it contains the fixes from earlier patch releases together with subsequent fixes.
  • An earlier P-release should not be considered more stable solely because it has been available longer.
  • Before upgrading, review the applicable release notes, known issues, interoperability requirements, and upgrade-specific considerations for the environment.
