Applies to

  • NetApp FAS2720
  • ONTAP 9.16.1 and later (including 9.17.1P6)
  • Entry-level FAS systems running high NAS workloads (CIFS/NFS)
  • Clusters with large numbers of junctioned volumes or elevated disk/file I/O

Issue

  • After upgrading a FAS2720 system to ONTAP 9.17.1P6, frequent system alerts are generated with the following log message, primarily on one node:

wafl.memory.statusVeryLowMemory: WAFL is running very low on memory, with xxxMB remaining.

  • Alerts occur regularly, often at similar times each day.
  • The system is serving CIFS shares only.
  • No immediate business impact, but risk of controller instability exists.
  • Previous recommendations (ONTAP upgrade, reducing configuration backup scratch space) did not resolve the issue.
