Data Processing Latency on AFF from workload which switches volumes rapidly

Applies to

  • AFF (can affect FAS, but less likely to be noticed)
  • ONTAP 9
  • Environment with large amounts of LUNs or other virtual disks (well over 16)

Issue

  • High CPU Data Latency above 1 ms
  • The workloads use RAID striping to different LUNs or virtual disks in ONTAP, striping across the many volumes
  • ONTAP only has 16 affinities maximum, and the amount of volumes doing work is larger
