Can performance problems arise if all volumes are stored on a single node

Answer

  • In a 2-node cluster or more if all or most of the volumes are hosted on a single node there is a likely chance of performance issue as this could lead to disparate usage of system resources like CPU ,memory and disks
  • Most of the IO will be directed and handled by the node that hosts the volume.
  • This could also lead to the system not utilizing its full capacity.

 However, this does not always mean there will be latency (slowness). It depends on:

  • How much data is being accessed
  • What kind of disks are used (HDD or SSD)
  • How busy the node is
  • How the volumes are set up

If the active node becomes too busy, it can slow down responses.

Tools like Active IQ Unified Manager can help monitor this and show if a node or aggregate is getting overloaded.
