Volume move stalls with “wafl.sm.vvol.read.failed”

Issue

During an ONTAP 9 volume move operation, the following errors were observed and the volume move progress stalled:

  • ONTAP event log ALERT
ALERT wafl.sm.vvol.read.failed: SnapMirror encountered an error while reading the block at VVBN65861xxxxx in volume 'vol1@vserver:6ebbae4a-aa81-11ec-bf42-xxxxxxxx'
  • The volume move was stuck for several hours
  • The majority of the data (68%) was tiered to the StorageGrid capacity tier
