  • ONTAP 9.17.1 and later
  • AFF, ASA or FAS systems

Issue

  • When attempting to join two new nodes running ONTAP 9.17.1 and later to an existing cluster 8-node cluster running ONTAP 9.16.1P10 and later, it fails with error:

Job "Node Add Job" [id 12345] (Node Add Job) completed unsuccessfully: Node add Job failed: Failed to start cluster join on node: 169.254.1.242: The currently running image on this node lacks the following capabilities which are installed on other nodes in the cluster: sm_cg_restart_enabled This node must be upgraded to 9.16.1P11 or a later release or the cluster must be downgraded to the release version of this node.  Resolve the issue, then try the command again.

  • Example:
    • Cluster is on ONTAP 9.16.1P11. New AFF C30 nodes shipped with ONTAP 9.17.1P3 to support X60135A NICs.
    • Downgrading AFF C30 to 9.16.1P11 is not possible if  X60135A 100GbE I/O modules are installed (support begins with 9.17.1).
    • Upgrading the cluster to 9.17.1 is not possible because FAS8200 is not support beyond ONTAP 9.16.1.
