CONTAP-824188: Effiency metadata grows after enabling storage efficiency for a DP volume

Issue

  • The command "volume efficiency show" reports "op-status" as "Active" on a DP volume for a very long time without making any progress but only showing "status" stuck at "Fingerprint is being recovered from volume (0% complete)"
  • The efficiency log (logs/sis from SPI interface) shows a VERIFY operation being triggered from an incoming snapmirror operation ("sis start vault") very short after efficiency was enabled on the affected DP volume:

  • The efficiency operation then loops on every incoming snapmirror update, never able to complete the "Generating aggr FPDB from volume FPDB" stage:

  • Over time, the "Deduplication Metadata" from command "volume show-footprint" for the affected volume keeps on growing unexpectedly high and can even consume most of the volume aggregate footprint. In this example already 61% of the volume footprint is consumed by Deduplication metadata:
