CONTAP-539599: "Memory low" errors reported after upgrading to ONTAP 9.16.1 and later

Issue

  • After upgrading to ONTAP releases 9.16.1 and later, entry-level platforms might report "low memory" errors similar to the following:

Thu Oct 16 09:16:49 +0000 [clus-01: free_cache_trigger_proc: wafl.memory.statusVeryLowMemory:alert]: WAFL is running very low on memory, with 570MB remaining.
Thu Oct 16 09:26:41 +0000 [clus-01: free_cache_trigger_proc: wafl.memory.statusVeryLowMemory:alert]: WAFL is running very low on memory, with 565MB remaining.
  • Under heavy load, the controllers might experience a disruption and a panic reboot with a message similar to the following:

PANIC: Process vldb unresponsive for 210 seconds in process nodewatchdog on release 9.16.1P2 (C) on Sun Oct 12 00:32:42 UTC 2025
PANIC: Process secd unresponsive for 210 seconds in process nodewatchdog on release 9.16.1P2 (C) on Thu Oct 16 11:18:22 UTC 2025
PANIC: Process mgwd unresponsive for 210 seconds (mgwd startup: "(3271)") in process nodewatchdog on release 9.16.1P2 (C) on Sat Oct 11 00:13:21 UTC 2025
