Unable to remove node from cluster due to stale MetroCluster entries

Issue

When attempting to remove nodes from a cluster, the following error is reported:

ClusterA::*> cluster remove-node -node Node_A1 

Warning: This command will remove node "Node_A1" from the cluster. You must remove the failover partner as well. This will permanently remove from the cluster volumes
         that remain on that node and logical interfaces with that node as the home-node. Contact support for additional guidance.

Do you want to continue? {y|n}: y

Error: command failed: [Job 12345] Job failed:
Node "Node_A1" is a member of MetroCluster DR group "1". Remove all nodes from DR group and delete the DR group.
