  • ONTAP 9.x
  • SVM DR

Answer

  • No, SVM DR for Disaster Recovery is only supported when source and destination are on the same version of ONTAP
    • This is to ensure failover and failback operations are always successful
    • This rule includes cloud-only releases (e.g., SVMDR for Disaster Recovery is not supported for a source on ONTAP 9.11.0 replicating to a destination on ONTAP 9.11.1)
  • However, SVM DR for Migration or planned ONTAP upgrades supports replication in a single direction from an earlier ONTAP version on the source to a later ONTAP version on the destination
    • The destination ONTAP version must be no more than two versions newer, this rule does not distinguish between cloud-only ONTAP releases and on-prem ONTAP releases. For example, ONTAP 9.9.1 on the source is supported to ONTAP 9.9.1, ONTAP 9.10.0, and ONTAP 9.10.1 on the destination
    • The SVM DR destination cluster must always be on the same or newer release than the source, including cloud-only releases. For example, ONTAP 9.10.1 cannot replicate to ONTAP 9.10.0
