  • ONTAP System Manager 9.7 and later
  • RAID groups belonging to the aggregate are nearly full

Answer

There is an algorithm in ONTAP that purposely avoids adding disks to prevent creating a "hotspot" on the aggregate. 

  • There are no such restrictions while adding the spares from CLI.
  • Users can add spare disks using the CLI or create a larger raid group on the aggregate by utilizing additional spare disks through ONTAP System Manager.
