Answer

  • E-Series volume ownership transfer is generally a fast operation, taking between milliseconds to a few seconds to complete. The duration of the transfer can be influenced by system performance, current workload, and the configuration of the storage system.
  • The volume ownership dictates through which controller host I/O should be directed.
  • Transfers of volume ownership can be initiated by user requests, automated processes like Automatic Volume Transfer (AVT), or in response to controller failover scenarios.
  • During SANtricity OS upgrade update, the volumes are temporarily transferred while each controller is rebooted to activate the new software. Once the upgrade is complete, the volumes are returned to their preferred owning controller.
  • The process includes a temporary suspension of the volume cache operations as its ownership is logically switched from one controller to the other.
