Cannot delete an empty bucket that has versioning suspended in StorageGRID

Issue 

StorageGRID reports below error when trying to delete a bucket:
Unable to delete the bucket because the bucket is not empty. You must delete all objects before you can delete this bucket

The bucket however appears completely empty showing 0 bytes and 0 objects
